Facts on alumina dust
published: Saturday | August 12, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

In reference to the letter to the Editor titled 'Hayes crisis', published August 10, your readers may be interested in the following facts.

1. Dust collection equipment, known as electrostatic precipitators (and which your correspondent asks to be put in place), are already installed on all of Jamalco's calciners to collect alumina dust.

2. Dust readings are taken on all stacks to ensure Jamalco meets regulatory standards.

3. All alumina conveyor systems are covered and have dust collectors at cross-over points to prevent dust escaping.

In addition, Jamalco has regular audits, by local and international organisations, of its environmental management systems to ensure it continues to meet the required standards, and to find opportunities for improvement.

I am, etc.,

BRIAN DOY

Public Affairs Manager

Jamalco
