Mad rush for quarter-finals
published: Saturday | August 12, 2006

Anthony Foster, Freelance Writer

Thirteen teams will be jostling for quarter-final positions when the last set of preliminary round matches in the all-island Capital & Credit limited-overs cricket bowls off today.

In Zone A, Clarendon, who will be idle, as well as Westmoreland and Trelawny are all seeking to join the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) in the final eight.

The soldiers lead the zone with nine points, but either Trelawny or Westmoreland, who will clash at Bounty Hall, can join them.

Trelawny and Westmoreland have five points each, which means anything besides an outright victory will send Clarendon through with eight points.

TRICKY ZONE

Zone B looks a tricky one as though Police, Hanover, Manchester and St. Elizabeth can end with nine points each, the latter, by virtue of beating Manchester, look safe.

Manchester will take on out-of-contention Lucas at Kirkvine, while Hanover and Police clash at Elgin Town.

St. Catherine are runaway leaders in Zone C with 16 points, which leaves Kingston, Portland and St. Catherine Parish with a chance of joining them.

MUST-WIN SITUATION

Kingston on nine points face out-of-contention St. Thomas at Goodyear in a must-win situation.

Portland and St. Catherine Parish on six and five points, respectively could take advantage if Kingston lose or secure a no-result.

Defending champions Melbourne have secured Zone D honours.

Second-place St. James (eight points) could join Melbourne on 12 points with a win.

But if they fail to win, Kensington (five points) could advance with a win over Kingston & St. Andrew.
