U-19 girls launch regional tussle
published: Saturday | August 12, 2006

The inaugural West Indies Under-19 Women Cricket tournament bowls off today with two matches.

Jamaica face the President's XI at University of Technology (UTech) while Barbados oppose Trinidad & Tobago at Port Esquivel. Both matches begin at 9:30am.

The President's XI team consists of local players only, due to financial constraints on the other territories.

The Jamaica team is very young and according to the coach, Cleon Smith, despite Barbados and Trinidad & Tobago having nine and six players respectively from their senior teams, Jamaica will be going out to compete.

"It will be hard (to win), but not impossible," he said. "When a team is successful you never have more than three or four people performing on the day, so if we can get at least four people performing in all areas, we can create some upset," he added.

"We have an all-round team. We don't have a team that dominates any specific area," he lamented. "We have a balanced team, we can get batting from the bowlers and bowling from the batters," he explained.

Jamaica squad: Stephanie Taylor (captain), Phillipa Badroe, Kimberley Simms, Jodian Morgan, Shanel Daley, Keneshia Ferron, Jody-Ann Brown, Claudine Beckford, Rashana Outar, Abbie-Gaye Hendricks, Shanique Cox, Chanae Cox Mishka Whyte and Shauna-Kay Edwards.
