published: Friday | August 18, 2006

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

NUMBER ONE seed Dwayne Pagon booked his spot in the men's Open quarter-finals of the Bank of Nova Scotia Amateur Tennis Championship following a straight sets win over Allie McNab at the Liguanea Club courts on Wednesday night.

Pagon, who has enjoyed a fair amount of success in recent local tournaments, wrapped up the first set quickly at 6-3 before allowing McNab one game less in the second to win the match. Top-ranked junior Kristofer Martin also blasted his way into the quarter-finals in impressive fashion, first sweeping away the more experienced Justin Morgan 6-0, 6-2 and then dismissing fellow junior Orick Angus 6-1, 6-0.

Other games

In other games, Dane Vernon blanked Adam Lue Yen 6-0, 6-0, C. Lloyd Allen defeated Franklyn Grenion 6-0, 6-4 while Marc Chin had to battle for three sets with David Shirley before eventually triumphing 4-6, 7-6, 7-5.

In Class One doubles action, Pagon teamed with nephew Dominic Pagon to sweep away Akeem Hinds and Matthew Rodrigues 6-1, 6-0 while Adam Harris, who made an untimely exit from singles play, fared better in doubles action as he teamed with Dane Vernon to defeat the pair of Adam and Josh Lue Yen 6-2, 6-3.

In men's Class Three doubles play, Andrew Brown and Nelton Forsythe got the better of Leon Senior and Wayne Ashley 6-4, 6-4.
