No room for defensiveness
published: Sunday | August 20, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

As one who benefited immensely from the ministry of the church at 6 Dayton Avenue in my teenage years (some 30 years ago), I grieve at the manner in which the church's leadership acted recently.

Sin in the church is not new, but there is simply no room in the church of God for quiet, internal damage control or worse, defensiveness, in matters of this magnitude. Berating whistle-blowers and media salivating over another church scandal do not honour the Lord.

As a Christian, I feel the pain of Dayton and oh I wish that Dayton would feel pain for the victim, and the Lord's name which has been dishonoured. Surely then they would have responded with greater humility and contrition.

I am, etc.,
