Junior Reggae Boyz cruise into quarters
published: Sunday | August 20, 2006

Carl Spence, Gleaner Writer

Jamaica's Under-17s eased into the quarter-finals of the Caribbean Football Union's (CFU) Youth Cup yesterday with a convincing 8-0 win over Dominica in their final preliminary round match played in Couva, Trinidad and Tobago.

The win came courtesy of a hat-trick from Man-of-the-Match, Romario Campbell, who scored in the 16th, 50th and 68th minutes. However, it was Andre Beckford who opened the scoring in the 12th minute.

Adding to the score were John-Ross Doyley, who converted his chance in the 54th minute, Akeem Brown, scoring in the 63rd, Kenniel Hyde in the 79th and Marlon Abraham in the 80th.

The win was Jamaica's third in the competition following their 2-1 triumph over Cuba on Tuesday and a 6-2 win over the Bahamas on Thursday. They will next meet Barbados in the quarter-finals to be played on August 22.

Jamaica coach David Hunt said he was confident of victory.

played to instructions

"We were expecting to win because Dominica came into the match with two losses." said Hunt. "The team played to my instructions and I think that is why we won.

Looking ahead to the quarterfinals, Hunt said: "Barbados is expected to be a tougher opponent based on how they have played so far in the tournament. But if the players continue improving game by game we are expected to do well against Barbados."
