Bold (new) leadership needed!
published: Monday | August 21, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

I care to comment on the Letter of the Day 'Thank you Madam PM', published in your paper recently from R. Woung of New York. Mr. Woung was overwhelmed by the charisma and prospects of PM Simpson Miller, having been 'charmed' at a recent function in New York, where she appeared as guest speaker. Fortunately, most of us are not that naive (anymore).

What he failed to understand is that the PM's honeymoon is long over. For sure, Jamaica's problems didn't happen overnight, but for the most part, they happened under the management and mismanagement of the PNP administration and its failed policies over many years. The lack of accountability, transparency and direction which, for years, continued to fail to stimulate and excite an already bored and frustrated electorate. The new PM, as a senior Cabinet Minister back then, was always (and continues to be) an integral part of all this. She represents nothing new, except being the first female PM appointed - big deal!

Mr. Woung, like many others (like myself) chose NOT to live in Jamaica for many reasons, mostly due to the many problems which continue to worsen in Jamaica today. There has hardly been any change or any sign of hope since Madam PM Simpson Miller took office. Same old story, just a different PM.

There have been numerous opportunities for the PM to inspire hope. Instead, she is constantly at church meetings and speaking about divine intervention and divine appointment. 'Mingling' and making 'empty promises' as special guest speaker is hardly enough (anymore). What this country needs is bold policies and exciting new direction, backed by action - and it's badly needed now!

I am, etc.,

P. CHIN
