Be aware of mail content restrictions
published: Monday | August 21, 2006

Based on recent developments in the international arena regarding airline security arrangements, it is prudent to alert Jamaica Post customers to existing restrictions regarding items that are not allowed in the mail.

PROHIBITIONS

There are some things that are obvious: explosives, drugs, guns, ammunition, etc.

It is also prohibited to send the following items by mail:

Dangerous articles, especially sharp or pointed objects, unless they are packaged to specification;

Inflammable liquids, matches, and incendiary devices such as fireworks.

Items that may expose postal workers or recipients to danger or may damage other articles or postal equipment in course of conveyance (e.g. biological samples or poisons - remember the anthrax and mail bomb scares?).

Anything consisting of or containing narcotics, except pre-approved for medical or scientific purposes.

Medicine of any kind, unless the formula or the content is printed clearly on the container in English and/or French. The Ministry of Health has to approve most medications prior to release.

Pressurised cans or containers (e.g. cigarette lighters, spray paint, oxygen, aerosol sprays).

Any article prohibited by postal, customs or other laws or regulations of the country to which the article is posted, or to which it is addressed, or through which it must pass.

Perishable articles: Except when addressed to a destination within the island and enclosed in a hermetically sealed tin. Perishable items include foods and plants. Note: Anything that attracts rats must be packed in 'rat-proof' containers.

Liquids, unless stored in special containers that meet specifications.

'Army-type' camouflage uniforms and any type of equipment used by armed forces.

Stricter security measures have been implemented since the September 11, 2001 attacks as fears of global terrorism have grown. There were also alleged plots by terrorists, targeting the United States Postal Service, to use deadly biological agents such as anthrax.

Just over a week ago, British police uncovered a plot to blow up 10 aircraft heading to the U.S. Just hours later, airports and airlines across the globe began implementing tougher security regulations to minimise threats.
