National Works Agency (NWA) to get scales to curb overloading of trucks - The scales were reportedly ordered over five years ago
published: Tuesday | August 22, 2006

Deon P. Green, Gleaner Writer

After years of debate over the damage being done to the roads by overladen trucks, the National Works Agency (NWA) says the scales to determine specific weights to be carried by the large vehicles will soon be in place.

Stephen Shaw, public relations officer at the NWA, told The Gleaner that much progress had been made in drafting the necessary legislation to have the scales on the road to kick-start a three-year programme.

Mum on arrival

He said the scales will be placed at several points across the island. He was, however, tight-lipped on when the scales would arrive in the island.

The scales were reportedly ordered over five years ago when work was being done on the Harbour View to Morant Bay main road.

The section of the road leading to Kingston now provides a bumpy ride for motorists who blame the overloaded trucks for the damage to the roadway.
