The Editor, Sir:
In regards to the article published on Sunday, August 20, where it was reported that there was rodent infestation at the women's facilities at Fort Augusta, the reports are contradictory.
Frankly, I don't understand the Commissioner of Corrections, Major Richard Reese, stating that the reports were exaggerated. Everyone knows that if you see one rat, there is a nesting of many.
Since you, Major, go on record saying that there is a problem with the drainage system, then is it any wonder that the back-up of waste matter would attract these rodents? Why was the problem not addressed before now?
Outbreak
If a reputable exterminating company were assigned to this facility and were spraying the facility on a monthly basis then you would not have an outbreak. No matter what the circumstances are that led the inmates there in the first place, they are humans, so let's do the right thing by correcting the situation so that there will not be a major health epidemic.
I am, etc.,
