The Editor, Sir:
The issue of Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller being only in office for nearly four months is immaterial to judging the PNP as a political party over the last 17 years. The fact is, the current Prime Minister was always there, as she so eloquently stated in her 2006-2007 budget speech.
A Government of a country is in no way dependent on any individual, but the government as a party and its policies, its ideology, its philosophy and how they govern as a unified unit, which would make the nation better. Thus the current PM is not a new government but a continuance of an incumbent government. Thus in judging the PNP on crime, it cannot be this year versus last year, it has to be what it was in 1989 versus where it is now after 17 years of an incumbent government, and it is much worse.
It's about how growth has occurred and the average of this government is almost negligible. It's about the PNP as a team, as a government. What happened within the PNP is but cosmetic changes [face-card] of leadership but the same PNP policies remain and most Jamaicans are clamouring for real changes, which only the JLP with its new leader, Mr. Golding, with a new team can create, that might ensure equal rights and justice for each Jamaican and might reflect the ideal of freedom and democracy that every Jamaican really counts and is equal under the law!
I am, etc.,
