The Bustamante Hospital for Children on Wednesday received a donation of flow meters, equipment used in humidifiers, nebulisers, and oxygen tanks, which are critical to patient care.
The contribution of the flow meters from IGL Ltd. was made possible due to the intervention of Sherlene Taylor-White, who is pursuing a nursing administration course at the hospital. Nurse White said that there are not enough flow meters on the medical ward where she is currently assigned.
"The problem is compounded whenever there are numerous admissions," she said. "In order to treat some of these patients, especially our asthmatic patients who are in need of nebulisation, the nurses have to move beds to available meters or, in some cases, borrow from other wards."
Necessary tool
"The meters are a necessary tool for our daily operations. There was always need to have more of these meters for the hospital," said Hospital Administrator Henry Anglin. "This donation by IGL will significantly assist with improving our patient care."
For parents like Yolanda Allen, whose daughter was admitted on the ward, suffering from an asthma attack, their children's care will be enhanced as the additional flow meters will ensure that there is an adequate supply, just in case the ward is fully occupied.
Shelley Sterling, marketing
manager at IGL Ltd., described the donation of the flow meters as "the first of many".
She said: "Our aim is to help the Bustamante Hospital, the sole paediatric hospital in the island, to continue to provide excellent health care for our children."
