With Wednesday's $8.8 million Pick-9 now history, the exotic bets start anew on tomorrow's 11-race programme at Caymanas Park, both with hefty guaranteed minimums.
The Pick-9, which embraces races three to 11, boasts $1 million, while the Super-6 from races six to 11, offers $500,000. We look at the Super-6. It gets under way with a $160,000 claiming race over 1500 metres for four-year-olds and up to be contested by 10 starters. Indications are that the recently disqualified winner MY PAL DON, with apprentice Andre Martin again in the saddle, will start a firm favourite.
Trained by Colin Blair, the seven-year-old gelding won decisively over 1400 metres on August 9, only to be disqualified for causing interference at the home turn. He can definitely gain compensation tomorrow, but should be weary of MR. Q.G.P., RED DRAGON and the free running GLORIOUS ONE. MR. Q.G.P. has beaten better in the not-too-distant past and with the claiming apprentice Harriston Lewis reducing his weight to 51.0kg, the hint should be taken.
AD INFINITUM, who last year was involved in some keen battles with subsequent 'Horse of the Year' MIRACLE MAN in the Derby and St. Leger, reports from an eight-month absence well trained for the seventh race 1500 metres and despite the presence of GIRL IN GOLD, ROYAL RUN and PASSA PASSA, he should return on a winning note.
Subject of investigation
Champion jockey Brian Harding, who rode five winners on Wednesday. will again partner AD INFINITUM for in-form trainer Anthony 'Baba' Nunes. CORDITE, currently the subject of an investigation by the JRC (and police) for two suspect performances on May 6 and 23 when running for a different stable, is weighted to win the eighth race for $240,000-$220,000 claimers (over 1400m), ahead of recent winner LATIN KING, the front running HAWAIIAN DANCER and SHADEKAY. POWER CRACKER, having signalled his return to form when chasing home BOMBAY EXPRESS recently, gets the nod over LIBERTADOR and THUNDER CLAP in the ninth race. The 10th race for the Eileen Cliggott Trophy (graded stakes) over 1300 metres, should provide an acid test for 'Horse of the Year' MIRACLE MAN, who is unbeaten in five starts this season. Although seemingly vulnerable going this short, MIRACLE MAN (Harding up) possesses so much class that he could just about get the better of the late kicking FORMALLY GOLD and the front running LIL' COUNTRY BOY. DOUBLE DIAMOND, who made a promising debut back in March, should return with a bang under Charles Hussey in the closing race for maiden three-year-olds.
