Hold teachers accountable
published: Saturday | August 26, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

I find it difficult to believe that Jamaican teachers leave for greener pastures when the qualifications and licensing are extremely rigid and timely for classroom teachers in the United States.

Most developed countries require more background checks and FBI fingerprinting, before employment in the education system. There are always cross-checks of state and federal training of teacher personnel. A four-year degree teacher's certification exam and more are minimum requirements. Plus teachers must adhere to the child abuse laws. For example, there are 'moral turpitude laws' which say if you are found guilty of kicking a cat, you can never teach again in a classroom. So, this alone will eliminate the 'angry' Jamaican female.

It is time that the Jamaican Government make the people (educators) hired be accountable to the system and the classroom, and re-trained regularly.

I am, etc.,
