Stolen sugar leaves bitter taste for accused manager
published: Saturday | August 26, 2006

Daraine Luton, Staff Reporter

A SWEET bite turned sour for a 41-year-old procurement and logistics manager who allegedly stole more than $200,000 worth of sugar from his employers at Jamaica Citrus Limited.

The man, Devon Nooks, was up to late yesterday still being questioned by Operation Kingfish detectives in connection with the seizure of several bags of sugar found at premises at Lincoln Road in Kingston on Wednesday.

Nooks was questioned by Kingfish following police investigations. Unlike the norm, where employers call in the police after suspecting something was going wrong, it was the police who alerted Jamaica Citrus.

"They told me that they had found some sugar and he (Nooks) said it was taken from our premises," general manager Michael Boyd told The Gleaner yesterday.

Sugar found

The police said that, around mid-day on Wednesday, members of the Special Anti-Crime Task Force carried out an operation in the Lincoln Road area and, during a search of the premises, 59 bags of sugar were found.

Mr. Boyd said 100 bags of sugar are missing and persons of interest are being questioned by the police.

Jamaica Citrus Limited, producers of Juiceyful juices, imports sugar as a raw material in their box drinks and juices.
