LONDON (AP):

MANCHESTER UNITED improved their English Premier League record to 3-0 yesterday, beating newly promoted Watford 2-1 on a second-half goal by Ryan Giggs.

United, who are trying to re-establish themselves after two years of domination by Chelsea, took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute on Mikael Silvestre's goal.

Damien Francis equalised in the 34th, and Giggs scored the winner in the 52nd, capitalising on a poor pass by substitute Matthew Spring.

Bad news

The only bad news was England defender Rio Ferdinand, who may have broken his toe in the game. Manager Alex Ferguson said he would be examined today and would probably miss upcoming European Championship qualifiers against Andorra and Macedonia.

"We think Rio might have a broken toe, so I don't think he will be joining up with England," Ferguson said.

Otherwise, Ferguson was satisfied.

"The team had to battle to get that result," he said. "They (Watford) are a very, very difficult team to play against," Ferguson added. "They make you work the whole game. You're never going to get an easy game here. They are a handful."

Everton moved into second place with seven points in three games, beating Tottenham 2-0 at White Heart Lane. Everton took the lead in the 53rd on Calum Davenport's own-goal, and got the clincher in the 66th from Andy Johnson.

One man short

Everton played a man short from the 33rd minute when Kevin Kilbane was sent off on his second yellow card.

"Today's performance has probably given me as much pleasure as any of them," Everton manager David Moyes said. "Coming to Tottenham, we know they have spent big and brought in some tremendous players. Today, I thought we played really well and won the game with 10 men. When we got to 10, we played even better and passed better."

Liverpool picked up their first Premier League victory of the season, beating West Ham 2-1 on first-half goals from Daniel Agger and Peter Crouch.

Liverpool opened last weekend with a disappointing 1-1 draw at newly promoted Sheffield United.

Bobby Zamora gave West Ham a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute. The loss was West Ham's first this season after a victory and draw. West Ham have not won at Anfield since 1963.

New signing Dirk Kuyt made his first appearance for Liverpool since moving from Feyenoord, coming on six minutes into the second half.

"It was wonderful to make my debut at Anfield," Kuyt said. "It feels great, but the win is the most important thing."

Manchester City upset Arsenal 1-0, giving the Blues four points in the three games. Arsenal, the runners-up last season in the Champions League, have only one point in two games. Joey Barton scored the winner for Man City on a 41st-minute penalty.

Other winners

Also, it was: Charlton 2, Bolton 0; Fulham 1, Sheffield United 0; and Wigan 1, Reading 0.

Charlton played a man short from the 28th when Hermann Hreidarsson was sent off with a red card. Bolton went down to 10 in the 72nd when Kevin Davies was sent off.

Darren Bent scored the winner for Charlton on a second-half penalty in the 65th, and then got his second in the 85th from open play.

Jimmy Bullard got the winner for Fulham in the 40th in the 1-0 win over Sheffield United, and Emile Heskey scored for Wigan in the 38th in the 1-0 victory over Reading.
