The Office and 24 took top honours at the 58th annual Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday. The following are key facts about the major winners:

BEST DRAMA SERIES: The Fox network spy thriller 24 finally won on its fifth nomination in the top category.

BEST COMEDY SERIES: NBC's new workplace satire The Office, adapted from a popular British series of the same name, won its first Emmy, but its star, comedian Steve Carell, lost his bid for best lead comedic actor.

BEST ACTOR, DRAMA: Canadian-bred Kiefer Sutherland, who plays government agent Jack Bauer on 24, finally won on his fifth try for the award.

BEST ACTOR, COMEDY: Tony Shalhoub won his third Emmy for playing an obsessive-compulsive detective on the USA Network's Monk, and declared himself completely surprised because he assumed Carell would win.

BEST ACTRESS, DRAMA: Mariska Hargitay, daughter of Jayne Mansfield, won for her role as a sex-crimes detective on NBC's Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Her victory was a surprise.

BEST ACTRESS, COMEDY: Julia Louis-Dreyfus broke the curse of Seinfeld co-stars by winning an Emmy for her new CBS series, The New Adventures of Old Christine.
