Fire awareness
published: Tuesday | August 29, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The recent fire at Springfield, St. James, in which three children perished and the death of their father as a result of burns he sustained while trying to rescue them from the burning house is a timely reminder of the danger of re-entering a burning building.

Recently, children were seen receiving awards as heroes for saving the live of their siblings from burning buildings. Very good effort when the result is positive. However, in the act of rewarding these individuals, emphasis must be placed on the inherent danger in such circumstances.

The Jamaica Fire Brigade in its fire awareness programme in schools, civic and neighbourhood watch groups sensitise persons how to develop fire exit drill plans for their homes.

In order to get out alive, the plan must be rehearsed on a regular basis and even the smallest child should participate in this exercise.

I am, etc.,

MORINE THOMPSON

Deputy Superintendent

Savanna-la-Mar Fire Station

Westmoreland
