Election, an opportunity to take stock
published: Tuesday | August 29, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

Our forthcoming election is a good opportunity to take stock of the current situation in our nation, review where we have come from and look ahead. There is a fork in the road - we can vote for a change or for more of the same.

Jamaica needs to reconnect with its past. We have always been part of the Western world's system to our advantage. Our democracy and system of government are based upon the British model and the U.S.A. has given protection, economic advantage and moral influence to our country for decades (and more).

The alternative is to further align ourselves with the forces of communism in China and Venezuela. Look at China's record on human rights (how its people are treated) - would we like that replicated here?

This is our defining moment! This could be our finest hour! Will we use it responsibly? Votes are very, very valuable (the tools of democracy). Let us use them to take the 'right' fork in the road.

I am, etc.,

JOHN NELSON

Co. Director

Kingston 8
