Hard work really pays
published: Tuesday | August 29, 2006

Dana-Marie Dick

Dana-Marie Dick of Cam-pion College, made her family and friends proud when she copped nine ones in the 2006 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations.

"I was very excited, I was with my father when I got my grades and I was just so happy," she related. However, Dana-Marie said she was not surprised by her accomplishments because she worked hard and was expecting nothing less.

She also attributed her success to her encouraging parents Mary Dick, human resource and training officer at The Gleaner Company and Rev. Devon Dick, pastor at Boulevard Baptist Church, St. Andrew. Dana-Marie also noted that her sibling and teachers played a significant role in her success.

Dana-Marie told The Gleaner that her mother bought her a trophy, on which she would inscribe her performance if she scored above 85 per cent or ranked in the top five in class each school term.

Great encouragement

"That was very encouraging for me because I wanted to see more things on the trophy," she said.

The young achiever will be returning to Campion College in September where she will pursue subjects at the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Exami-nation (CAPE) level. Dana-Marie says she has a passion for mathematics and accounts and will be going on to university after she completes CAPE to read for an Actuarial Science degree.

While at lower school at Campion, Dana-Marie was involved in football, and was a member of the student council, interact club and debating society.

She noted her involvement in these extra curricular activities aided her performance at CSEC.

"There is a time and place for everything under the sun and it helped me to do up a timetable and manage my time efficiently," she said.

She walked away with the 'True Campionite' award at graduation. This award is presented to the student who is well-rounded in sports, academics, as well as is liked by teachers and peers.

Guided by the philosophy, "I can do all things through Christ", Dana-Marie recently got baptised at the Boulevard Baptist Church, St. Andrew.

She got ones in mathematics, English language, English literature, biology, chemistry, physics, information technology principles of accounts and Spanish.

If you gained more than six ones in the CSEC and would like to be featured by The Gleaner, please e-mail your scores and contact information to: editorial@gleanerjm.com
