The Editor, Sir:
I wish to correct two inaccuracies in the article titled 'Breadfruit to undergo economic study' that appeared in The Gleaner of August 24, 2006 on page B6 of the Feature section.
The article stated that I would be undertaking research work on the uses and economic potential of the breadfruit. For several years, my research on breadfruit has focussed on germplasm evaluation, one aspect of which relates to the uses of breadfruit. This, therefore, is on-going work. I am unaware of any existing proposals for a study on the economic potential of the crop.
The last paragraph suggested that I had seen a wider range of exhibits at the breadfruit festival at Bath than at similar events elsewhere in the Caribbean. This is a misconception since there is a range of products at all the festivals, however, some items are unique to individual countries, for example, breadfruit gizzada in Jamaica. This uniqueness widens the spectrum of utilisation and makes germplasm evaluation even more pertinent.
The importance of research collaboration with other relevant organisations is recognised and is being addressed.
I am, etc.,
