The Editor, Sir:
I must confess that I had not been paying great attention to the issue of the so-called NIS surplus until I had a death in my family and applied for the benefit. Of the cost of $375,000, I received $40,000.
When the rate of inflation and the value of the lifetime contribution made to this fund is compared to the proceeds received, it is a drop in the bucket.
Madam Prime Minister, with due respect, can the persons who made the contributions receive greater benefits as was the intention? It is our money, not the Government's to do as it pleases, or do we need the Privy Council to point it out?
I am, etc.,
