The Editor, Sir:
It is with great pleasure that I read about the arrival of Cuban teachers in Jamaica. I think this is a brilliant programme in assisting the young people of Jamaica in learning Spanish.
When I attended Manning's School in the '70s, three years of Spanish was mandatory. However, nowadays it's optional. I think every child in Jamaica should learn to speak a second language, especially Spanish, which is spoken by our neighbours in the greater Caribbean.
I hope the Ministry of Education takes it a little further and sets up an exchange programme whereby young Jamaicans can spend several weeks of the summer holidays in Cuba, where they can practise the spoken langauge for better proficiency.
I am, etc.,
