Practising the privacy act
published: Monday | September 4, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I was reading the responses to the question, 'Should employers test workers for HIV/AIDS' and decided to put my two cents in.

Where I now live, there is a little law known as the Privacy Act that prevents such things from happening. Employers do not have the right to know about the intimate details of your life, including your medical records. The only exception I see is if the employee's health condition is directly related/affecting his/her job performance. The employee along with the public needs to be more aware of the their own health and take the necessary precautions to avoid catching the disease and/or treating it.

A better approach would be an extensive marketing programme to get the word out to everyone to be tested for both HIV and AIDS and to practise safe sex.

I am, etc.,
