Commissioner calls on trained sergeants to act responsibly
published: Monday | September 4, 2006

Rasbert Turner, Gleaner Writer

Spanish Town, St. Catherine

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Novellette Grant, has called for police sergeants who participated in a recent management course at Twickenham Park, St. Catherine, to become more introspective about the way they carry out their duties.

ACP Grant, who heads the Professional Standards Branch of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, also told the 30 sergeants who graduated on Saturday that, as they have been trained in supervisory management, community policing, human rights policies and other such disciplines, they must now go out in the field and begin to deal with the in-house indiscipline facing the force. This, she said, will enable them to give better customer service to the wider public.

ACP Grant told the police sergeants that the training received during the three-week course should enable them to make the police force a better organisation. She added that there needs to be a very good middle-management structure of which the sergeant rank plays a pivotal role.

Appreciative of lessons

Several of the participants told The Gleaner that they were appreciative of the lessons that were taught to them, especially where customer service and ethics were concerned. They promised to be more friendly and cooperative with the public.

The members were drawn from Internal Affairs, Narcotics, Complaints, St. Catherine North, Protective Services, Immigration and other areas of the constabulary.
