The National Water Commission (NWC) claimed top corporate honours when they knocked off The Gleaner 3-0 in the KSAFA Business House Division One league final at the Constant Spring Football field on Saturday.
Division Two honours went to Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ) as they stopped Courts by an identical score line in the day's second final.
Having already won the knock-out competition, The Gleaner had their eyes firmly fixed on the double crown, but NWC had other ideas.
A positive start saw them get on the scoresheet early, as the quick, crafty Rollin Francis made his way to the by-line before whipping a ball across the face of goal which was headed powerfully into the back of the net by Captain Garfield Robinson for a 3rd-minute lead.
The Gleaner looked to be level when top marksman Fabian Nethersole broke away down the left flank in the 20th minute. He launched a powerful shot, from an acute angle about 8 yards away, which had NWC custodian Leroy Gray beaten but came crashing back off the underside of the crossbar.
So close
Though they had several oppor-tunities to pull level, that was as close as The Gleaner would get. In the 59th minute NWC's Steve Largie, who came on as a substitute at half-time, picked up a pass from Francis and stumbling into the box rifled wide of Gleaner custodian Andrew Sewell. Robinson then returned to slam the door firmly shut in the 89th minute when he received a pass from Dean Francis and broke away to beat Gleaner keeper Sewell, who had been left exposed by the quick counter-attack.
The Division Two final saw the SAJ get the better of Courts for a second time this season. SAJ captain Hawthore Ellis converted from the spot in the 5th minute, Marvin Jones got a second in the 17th and Ian McFarlane closed out the scoring in the 28th minute. Both SAJ and Courts have been promoted to Division One.
The Challenge competition which is contested between the Division One, Division Two and knock-out cup winner will be played on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. That game will see The Gleanerfacing SAJ at the Old Men's Hockey field. The winner of that encounter will meet NWC on Saturday to decide who will meet the St. Ann's Business House winner for the Champion Of Champions Trophy.
