The Editor, Sir:I wish to add my voice to the growing chorus clamouring for the status of National Heroine and Hero to be accorded to Mrs. Louise Bennett-Coverley and Mr. Robert Nesta Marley.
The Oxford Concise Dictionary defines hero "as a person noted or admired for courage and outstanding achievements" - both personalities will qualify under any of these headings - 'Miss Lou', when it was unthinkable to acknowledge our national individuality; and 'Bob', in being the most strident voice against injustice, intolerance and inequality of his time.
I am not of the view the heroism can only be measured and identified on the battlefield. The outstanding achievements that characterise the lives of these outstanding Jamaicans undoubtedly qualify them for this lofty recognition.
Furthermore, in light of the worldwide recognition of his name and his impact on foreigners, who both have visited and wish to Jamaica, I would respectfully recommend that the name of the Sangster International Airport be changed to Bob Marley International and the Port of Montego Bay be renamed Port Donald Sangster.
Imagine the feelings of exhilaration which would surge through both Jamaicans and visitors alike, as they listen to the announcement - "Ladies and gentlemen, we shall shortly be landing at the Bob Marley International Airport".
I am, etc.,
HOWARD HAMILTON, Q.C.
