Learning on the rock
published: Saturday | September 9, 2006

Mai'khi C'Nia

Now, it came to pass that the new school year commenced in Jamdown and all across the rock, pupils returned to their academic pursuits amid political condescending, disruptive and aggressive conduct by parents or communities, and smatterings of indifference and caustic indiscipline within the student population. Yea, such things have become outrageous and unappealing features of the learning industry on the rock.

Dearly beloved, 'tis indisputable that the enlightenment of our future generation is critical to Jamdown's 'First-World' aspirations and survival as a sovereign nation, thus, we need not prolong this point. 'Tis not to be trifled with or treated in elementary fashion, nor should it be used to feather any caps in this infinite football game of politics and its fickle rhetorical undertakings.

For the concept of free education for all of Jamdown was proffered as a political enticement as far back as the diabolical decade of the '70s to the reaction of much vilification. Behold, they who vilified at that time hath become the vilified this day, for they all intend to save the children of the skint from themselves by sending them to school free of charge. But woe unto ye who raise the people's expectations counter to the universal truism that nothing in capitalism is free, for if thou doth not outlay for tuition then thou shouldst undoubtedly expect thy pockets to be incin-erated by taxation.

And knowest ye not that any resolution to the education conundrum will require a holistic national initiative? Included therein is an overhaul of the concerned legislation; the political directorate shifting intent from securing votes with its every endeavour to sincerely attacking the problem at its very root and developing curative responses accordingly, and a revolution of the mindset of the people. For no gains art to be made from perpetuating the dubious and boisterous habit of citizens padlocking the school gate and forcefully suspending classes every time a school develops an issue. It would be a more productive and expedient approach if those same concerned adults applied their collective resources into developing an effective parent-teachers association to guide the policies of the school along lines which art appropriate and acceptable to their particular community.

Selah.
