Reading maketh a man, and there is no doubt about that statement. Enhance your child's appreciation for reading by taking him or her to the Jamaica Library Service (JLS) National Reading Fair being held today at Devon House in Kingston.

In its third year, the fair is being staged under the theme, 'Read, Explore and Discover'. The National Reading Fair is also a part of the celebratory activities to recognise the parish and national champions in the JLS's annual National Reading competition.

As described by Patricia Cuff, senior director of the JLS, today's reading fair is expected to be family fun-filled. It will showcase displays of literary works by popular authors, book signings, live readings, storytelling, ring games, face painting, Internet services, video games, clowns, magic shows and other exciting activities.

Storyteller extraordinare

Renowned authors will also be at the venue and storyteller extraordinare Amina Blackwood-Meeks will be on show.

"It will be exciting for children to see how much fun reading can be," said Mrs. Cuff.

"There will be activities to see and do; Live readings by authors, book signings, marching bands and float parade," she continued.

Patrons will also get an opportunity to meet the national reading and parish champions in all the categories. They will also be able to purchase books from a wide range of interesting categories while being exposed to Jamaica's arts and culture.

Most importantly, there is no entrance fee. "We want everybody to come!" said Mrs. Cuff.

Other highlights of the fair will be a live radio broadcast and a concert in the evening. The concert headliners are Christopher Martin, To-Isis, Tivoli Dancers, Nomadazz and others. The celebration is scheduled to commence at 12:30 p.m.

Go on over to Devon House today and read a book to your child.
