The
Jamaica Police Federa-tion is expected to receive an improved wage offer from
the Government today as both parties seek resolution to months-long salary negotiations.
Corporal Raymond Wilson, president of the federation, told The Gleaner yesterday that the executive would decide its next move when it received the report.
Late last week, representatives of the Police Federation, which represents rank and file cops, rejected the latest offer for the 2006-2008 contract period. Cpl. Wilson said the Government had improved the offer of 10 per cent in the first year to 12 1/2 per cent but had maintained its five per cent offer for year two.
The federation is, however, seeking a 45 per cent increase in year one and 30 per cent in year two.
Meanwhile, at a Jamaica Labour Party Area Council One meeting on the weekend, Opposition Spokesman on National Security, Derrick Smith, urged the Government to quickly conclude negotiations with the police. Mr. Smith argued that it would be unethical to hammer out a deal with the cops and shortly after call an election, thereby shoring up the police vote.
