Arise, unite and build
published: Tuesday | September 12, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

The Seaview Gardens Citizens Association held its inaugural 'Community Wellness Week' from August 27 to September 2. The theme was 'The Total You - Body, Mind, Spirit.' The activities included free medical check-ups by the Diabetic Association of Jamaica and the Jamaica Association for the Deaf. These were kindly sponsored by the National Health Fund. Valuable information was presented by the Child Development Agency; Jamaica Red Cross; National Solid Waste Management; Disaster management unit; Garmex and Dairy Industries of Jamaica. Nightly gospel services were convened by the local churches.

The citizens association also acknowledges the contributions of Ashroad Infrastructure Ltd.; Ray Campbell Ltd; the Jamaica Public Service; Kingston Hireage; The Jamaica Evangelistic Association and the police.

Goals

The aims of the week of activities were to (1) encourage togetherness and unity (2) promote healthy lifestyles (3) instil civic pride and (4) increase membership of the association.

For over 23 years, a strong, resilient and resourceful community has remained dormant. The time has come to vibrate; to be movers and shakers. Residents must arise, unite and build. The focus must be shifted from the problem and energies directed to implementing possible solutions.

The citizens association encourages all residents from both phases to stop looking at the negatives in the dark room. Come outside and visualise the bigger developing picture of hope, peace, unity, dignity and prosperity. Seaview Gardens was meant to be positively different, an enclave, (a group or area that is different in character from those surrounding it) and so it shall be! Let us work together and be proud of our achievements.

I am, etc.,
