Asafa Powell pulls out of 100m
published: Tuesday | September 12, 2006

Anthony Foster, Freelance Writer

Jamaica's World 100m record holder Asafa Powell will not run the 100m at next week's 10th IAAF World Cup in Athens, Greece, his manager Paul Doyle confirmed yesterday.

Powell, along with 17 other Jamaicans, was selected to represent the Americas team, but according to Doyle, his client will only run the 4x100m relay.

Doyle said the decision to pull Powell "was the coach's decision" and it was one, which was made long ago.

"He has had a long season and is tired," Doyle said.

Powell, the Commonwealth Games 100m champion, has equalled the world record 9.77 twice this season. Additionally he ran 10-sub 10 seconds races this season while remaining unbeaten.

Powell will team up with fellow countrymen Michael Frater, the World Championships silver medallist; Dwight Thomas, Ainsley Waugh and Trinidadian Marc Burns on the Americas sprint relay team.

The teams down to compete at the World Cup are:

Men: Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, Oceania, USA, France, Russia, and Greece.

Women: Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, Oceania, USA, Russia, Poland, and Greece.

Powell, who ran 9.89 seconds to win a close 100m at Saturday's IAAF World Athletics Final, will, however, close his season at the September 24 meet in Japan.

Meanwhile, Sherone Simpson, is trying to get a lane in the women's 200m.

"Sherone really wants to run the 200m, but presently, it looks like she will only run the 100m," Doyle said.

Doyle said Simpson want to avenge her 200m defeat to Allyson Felix at the IAAF World Athletics Final on Saturday.
