Inefficiency woes at UTech
published: Wednesday | September 13, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

Having taken the decision to return to UTech to further my studies in the field of engineering I am left in limbo by the level of inefficiency with which such a prominent university is run. It is now my third week in the system and had it not been for the fact that my timetable has been changed again I would have dismissed previous concerns as hitches in the system. One was the protest actions taken by lecturers with regards to back monies owed to them. Prior to that there was the issue of a hike in school fees without consulting with critical bodies such as the students union.

There is also a serious problem with space at the university and desk and chairs are something to be contested for by students. One lab which I attended the first week had 45 students in it - nothing was done as some students were left without space to put their stationery. Having to leave work at times and go to class then hustle for a desk and chair is not only time wasting but also unproductive, being told that there has been a change in the timetable during the second week of school and then again in the third week is distressing. We must find a way to get the system working properly.

I am, etc.,
