Eltham beat Tivoli
published: Wednesday | September 13, 2006

Anthony Foster, Freelance Writer

CAPTAIN ROMAINE Linton scored twice in two minutes to lead Eltham to a 5-0 win over Tivoli as action in the 2006 Pepsi/JN Manning Cup schoolboy football season continued yesterday.

In the match played at Eltham's school ground, Stewart hit the net in the 70th and 71st minutes of play.

Shevon Brown, who scored in the 55th and 87th minutes, supported him. Dwayne Hunter had earlier scored the opening goal on 45 minutes.

The scoreline flattered Tivoli as they could easily have had that score doubled against them after a poor performance. In the first half, Eltham hit the crossbar no less than four times and had a penalty saved and, although the second half produced four goals, they failed to score from several goalmouth scrambles.

Tivoli, on the other hand, had one good shot the entire game, which was brilliantly handle by Eltham's goalkeeper, Kelso Cousins.

Tivoli's coach, Dave Clarke, said he was satisfied with his team's performance.

"I think they did well based on the circumstances," Clarke said. "We picked a side only on Monday, because we had some problems - we were thinking whether or not we should enter the team but the fact that the fellows out there did well with their exams, I thought it best we should be in the competition," he said.

Quality team

Clarke said he was beaten by a quality team but has seen positives from his guys that can be worked with.

Meanwhile, Glenville Holmes, Eltham's assistant coach, described yesterday's performance as "excellent".

He did, however, have one concern.

"In the first half we got plenty of chances and did not convert but, apart from that, the guys did well," he said.

"The defence played well, the midfielders played extremely well; Tremaine Stewart stepped up to the plate and delivered, so no complaints really," he said.
