ST LUCIA: Former PM makes debut for new party
published: Thursday | September 14, 2006

LEWIS

CASTRIES, St. Lucia (CMC):

Saying that he had had enough of the vilification which characterised his association with the main opposition United Workers Party (UWP), former prime minister Dr. Vaughan Lewis made his long-awaited appearance on a platform of the ruling St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP) on Tuesday night.

Hundreds of SLP supporters braved the inclement weather in the capital to hear the academic and former Director General of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States, who will contest the Castries Central seat on a ticket of the ruling party.

Lewis told supporters that he had been subjected to much criticism after he had commissioned a poll in 2005 that indicated that the UWP, which he led into at least one general election, would lose the upcoming poll.
