Spanish Town, St. Catherine:
The St. Catherine Parish Council says that three major projects costing $20 million will be dealt with from the Lift Up Jamaica programme.
For one of the projects, the Commodore Cemetery in Linstead, work commenced on Friday. The work, which cost $6 million, comprised fencing of the cemetery and the rebuilding of the Bair House (a sanctuary where funerals can take place.
According to Commercial Services Manager, Ferdinand Page, the cemetery has been in disrepair for several years. Page said that the Bair House was badly damaged during the passage of Hurricane Ivan.
He said several persons trained under the Lift Up Jamaica programme have been employed to carry out the remedial work.
The other two projects, the manager said, that are slated for work are the Linstead Market and the grass yard of the Spanish Town Market.
At the Linstead Market, he said, $8 million will be spent to fix several areas including the market house, the meat house, and sanitary conveniences.
For the grass yard of the Spanish Town Market, he disclosed that $6 million will be spent to upgrade the facility. Work is also slated to begin soon on the leaking roof of the market.
