THE EDITOR, Sir:
Jamaica Labour Party Coun-cillors and Members of Parliament claim that they are always lobbying to press Central Government to grant the necessary funds for work in their divisions and constituencies respectively.
However, if the public is to be convinced of this, we should at least know some more about when these lobbying efforts are taking place, the ventures, and what has been achieved by them. If the public was kept abreast, we might even join with them in effort and encourage the intensification of efforts to lobby Central Government authorities until it yields results.
Productivity-based remuneration is now being mooted and this theory must transcend the concept of having its birth and residence not only in the private sector, but also to take root in the public sector.
The long awaited Local Govern-ment Reform must be put back on centre stage since within its scope, could be a radical shift in this direction, particularly if these councillors and MPs see themselves as an alternative worthy of their own salt.
Mr. Keith Millar, the consultant on Local Government Reform, has a duty to constantly up date the public via any means available to him/ his department, as to what is the status of these reforms. We can only support you if we are made aware of your accomplishments, even despite our knowing that you have to pull with you, people and institutions who may want to frustrate this paradigm.
I am, etc.,
