The ICC Cricket World Cup West Indies 2007 Act, which paves the way for the hosting of the games on local soil beginning in March, is to be tabled in Parliament next Tuesday.

Legislators are expected to give speedy passage to the bill which will address several areas impacting the tournament.

Minister of Information, Colin Campbell, speaking yesterday at the weekly post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, said the legislation will address special arrangements such as road closures, visas, work permits, import and export duties and exemption from income tax and other taxes.

The bill also includes matters relating to conduct at International Cricket Council Cup venues.

Power of removal

"It will authorise police officers to exercise power of removal. It will deal with entry and exit to the stadium, unauthorised entry ... conduct within the venues and prohibited items for the venues," he told journalists.

Other provisions in the bill include prohibition of certain advertising on lands and buildings. In terms of intellectual property rights, the Sunset Legislation also provides protection against ambush marketing and specified advertising.

Meanwhile, amendments are to be made to several pieces of legislation. According to the Information Minister the Jury Act, the Justice of the Peace Jurisdiction Act and the Legal Aid Act are to be tabled at the next sitting of the House.

Debate in Parliament to amend these laws is to begin soon.
