THE EDITOR, Sir:
I RECENTLY got a letter from an organisation in Germany which is called Zentrum fuer stille Helden (The Centre for Silent Heroes). This organisation researches the up to now undocumented fates and lives of German Jews who, with the help of German citizens, were able to escape the Holocaust during the Nazi regime in Germany from 1933-1945. The centre documents the lives of the persecuted persons, as well as their rescuers.
One such case is Ferdinand Strauss. Ferdinand Strauss escaped Nazi Germany with the help of Germans (names unknown). He escaped to Switzerland from where he migrated to Jamaica after the war. He died in Jamaica in 1984.
The centre would like to know if anybody in Jamaica knows anything about Ferdinand Strauss in order to document his life. Where did he live? Are there any descendants of Ferdi-nand Strauss in Jamaica? If so, do the descendants know any details about his escape from Germany, names of persons who helped? Where did he work, what did he do for a living?
Any little information will help to piece together his life. Your help and cooperation is greatly appreciated. Please send any information to henrique@cwjamaica.com.
I am, etc.,
BARBARA HENRIQUES
