Campion, Eltham battle to goalless stalemate
published: Tuesday | September 19, 2006

Group D favourites Eltham High and Campion College played to a 0-0 draw in their ISSA/Pepsi/JN Manning Cup schoolboy football match at Campion College's Sports Complex yesterday.

The two teams created few chances as both sat back and defended. Eltham's Tremaine Stewart dominated the midfield, but a packed Campion defence kept his teammates and himself some distance from goal. Campion's defence was marshalled by Carifta Under-17 800m and 1500m gold medallist Theon O'Connor. O'Connor is also the captain of the team.Eltham's coach Gregory Allen believes Campion achieved their objective.

"The Campion team came out here and they really defended stoutly, and that was just it," Allen explained.

Allen gave credit to his players for maintaining their composure as they also defended stoutly throughout the match.

Meanwhile, Campion's coach Andrew Salmon said that while he was not comfortable with a draw, they were satisfied with their defensive work.

"We managed to shut them out," he said. "Our defence held up well, they did not get many shots at goal.

Salmon, however, said his players did not finish well as they were let down by their 'final touches.'
