Western Bureau:
William Knibb came within three minutes of upsetting Herbert Morrison in their re-scheduled 2006 ISSA/Pepsi/JN daCosta Cup at Martha Brae, in Trelawny, yesterday but a late equaliser earned the Montego Bay team a point as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
In a game that started late because of the absence of adequate security, the William Knibb team, which went down 1-0 to Maldon in their first game, took a first half lead through Lance Laing and looked like being on their way to winning the game when substitute Gerald Duncan drew Herbert Morrison level in the 87th minute.
Victory
"We had victory in sight but careless defending allowed Herbert Morrison to get back into the game," said Cassman Williams, the coach of the William Knibb. "I thought we played below par and we really need to improve our play if we are going to do well this season."
William Knibb had the better of the early exchanges and got numerous early opportunities to take the lead, especially through Laing, whose speed and power had the Herbert Morrison defenders scrambling for most of the game. However, his finishing was woeful.
With action swinging from end to end, the William Knibb team took the lead in the 38th minute. Laing finally found the composure that was needed before the goal and fired home easily past the Herbert Morrison goalkeeper.
A minute before the half-time break, William Knibb's Cordell Perkins was red-carded after the referee spotted an infringement.
In the second half both teams made changes to strengthen their offence. William Knibb continued to look sharper in attack but faulty finishing continued to plague them.
