published: Thursday | September 21, 2006

TYLER CHIN walked away with top honours at the Globe Insurance Open Junior Tennis Championship after coming from a set behind to get the better of Kristofer Martin in three sets at the Liguanea Club recently.

Chin dropped the first set in the Under-18 category, 4-6, but rallied to outplay Martin in both the second and third sets, 6-3, 6-3, to walk away with the top prize. In boys' Under-16 action, Matthew Rodriquez also came from a set down to upstage Phillip Bond.

The second seeded Rodriquez dropped the opening set 2-6, but took the second 6-4 before battling his way to a 7-5 victory in the final set. In boys' Under-14 action, Joseph Ross had little trouble getting by Jordan Harris in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.

ITF Jamaica junior runner-up Randy Phillips continues to dominate his age group when he easily dismissed Horatio Ludford 6-1, 6-1 in the Under-12 final.

In the girls' Open section, Shaneka Knight defeated Toyan Gichie 6-3, 6-3, while it took Isabel Wittaker three sets to get by Monique Hanson 6-4, 4-6, 7-4 in the girls' Under-14 category.

More than 85 players competed in the two-day knock-out competition and represented Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Kingston.
