Financial aid for University of Technology (UTech) students
published: Friday | September 22, 2006

Students at the University of Technology (UTech), in St. Andrew, are being reminded of a number of tuition support options available at the campus for students facing challenges with school fee payments.

The options are as follows:

1. Part-payment arrangements through the University Finance and Business Service Office.

2. Support available through its Financial Aid Office, including:

- The University Earn and Study Programme

- Grants for needy students

- Scholarships and bursaries

3. Loans from the Students' Loan Bureau.

Tuition was increased at UTech this academic year for all students, moving up by 20 per cent for new students and 15 per cent for returning students. Some students protested the announced increases saying they were too high.

On Wednesday president of the Students' Union, Carl Wilkenson, said students were not registering because of the strain caused by the increases. He said more than half of students had not yet registered when only a mere 10 days were left for the close of registration.

However, the University said registration was not lagging and had in fact improved significantly over the last academic year. Of the approximately 8,000 students expected to register, 5,421 had registered up to September 20.
