No E coli spinach in Ja
published: Saturday | September 23, 2006

Following news of an outbreak of the E. coli bacteria that has caused several cases of food poisoning in the United States, the local Ministry of Health is reporting that none of the contaminated batch of spinach was exported to Jamaica.

Grace Allen-Young, Permanent Secretary at the Health Ministry, told The Gleaner yesterday that members of the environmental health team at the ministry have made several checks with local customs as well as U.S. authorities and have ascertained that the country is free from the contaminated spinach.

"We are maintaining our surveillance system. We are on alert but the latest report out of the U.S. is that none of the shipments came," Ms. Allen-Young said.

The outbreak of E. coli has now spread to half the states in the U.S.
