Top-of-the-table clashes take centre stage
published: Saturday | September 23, 2006

Adrian Frater, News Editor

Western Bureau:

On a day when champions Godfrey Stewart High School will be seeking to put their campaign back on track following their surprise mid-week loss to Petersfield, top-of-the-table clashes should take centre stage when action resumes in the 2006 ISSA/Pepsi/JN daCosta Cup today with 28 games, all starting at 3:30 p.m.

Godfrey Stewart, on three points from two games, will be playing away to the red-hot Grange Hill, who share the lead in Zone C with Petersfield. Both schools have the identical record of two wins from two games. In their games, Grange Hill outscored Maud McLeod 3-1 and clipped Manning's 1-0.

Beaten

"We were beaten by Petersfield because the players were over-confident going into the game," said Carl Palmer, coach of the Godfrey Stewart team. "The defeat has made the players realise that if we drop our guard the other teams are ready to capitalise. We have basically refocused the players and I can tell you that the approach will be much different against Grange Hill."

With the competition now on in earnest and teams jostling for important points, among the top-of-the-table clashes that should generate much excitement are the Zone E clash at St. Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) between the home team and Munro, both on nine points; the Zone B showdown between Rusea's (7) and Frome Technical (6), in Lucea; the Zone D match-up between Marcus Garvey (3) and Ocho Rios (3) at Drax Hall and the Zone I Garvey Maceo (6) home assignment against Glenmuir (9).

Godfrey Stewart should come out firing on all cylinders as while it is still early days, they must realise by now that the battle for the two inter-zone places from the zone will be quite hot with Grange Hill (6) Manning's (3) and Petersfield (6) all looking credible contenders. For their part, Grange Hill will be gunning to keep their 100% win record intact.

The Zone E showdown at STETHS between the home team and Munro should be a real 'slugfest' as both teams have been on a goal-scoring spree. STETHS have been scoring heavily. They have beaten Maggotty 9-0, Newell 6-0 and Lacovia 5-0. Munro have scored 2-0 wins against Lacovia and Black River and whipped Newell 5-0 in another game.
