WATA Tennis serves off
published: Saturday | September 23, 2006

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

The Trafalgar Travel Amateur series returns to the courts when the WATA Amateur Singles Tennis Championship, the second in a series of five tournaments, serves off at 9:00 a.m. today at the Liguanea Club.

Last year's Men's Class One champion Dwayne Pagon will look to hold on to the early lead he has earned from winning the first tournament in the series, the Llocket McGregor Open. However, he will be pushed by top junior Kristofer Martin, who will be boosted by his recent three-set triumph over rival Tyler Chin in the final of the Globe Insurance Open Junior Tennis Championship.

In good form

Martin missed the opening tournament and will be unseeded, but he is in good form and along with Chin, Christopher Lawson, and veteran Yussuf Migoko, should make the Class One race a very hot one. Levan Reid, a newcomer to the series, is the early leader over in Class Two, but will be have to be looking over his shoulder as challenges are expected to come from fourth-placed Stephen Jones, Mark Edwards and Carl Blisset.

Over in Men's Class Three Ruddy Chin leads the chasing pack on 100 points, followed by Marlon Brown on 75 and Leopold Fungsang on 45. Warrenton Dixon leads Class Four followed by Franklyn Grenion, Alexander Cools Lartique and Nelton Forsythe who is currently in fifth place.

The Women's B competition will be making its debut in this series with junior Daniel Monteith as the top seed and Sasha Hanna at second. The Women's B class was not played in the last tournament due to insufficient entries.
