Big win for Barbados
published: Monday | September 25, 2006

ST JOHN'S, CMC:

Barbados comfortably advanced to the next round of the Digicel Caribbean Cup as they trashed Anguilla 7-1 in their last Group B preliminary match at the Antigua Recreation Ground yesterday.

English-born professionals Paul Ifill and Mark McCammon both scored hat-tricks to power the Barbadians to their second win to end the group unbeaten in three matches on seven points.

It means that they have secured one of the two qualifying berths, joined by hosts Antigua and Barbuda, who beat St. Kitts and Nevis 1-0, who clinched second place.

Anguilla manfully withstood Barbados' early pressure until the 35th minute when McCammon, who plays for Doncaster Rovers in the English League, ended their resistance with a close range finish.

McCammon scored again in the 50th and 87th minutes to end the tournament with four goals.

More goals

Ifill, who partnered McCammon in attack, made it 2-0 after 40 minutes and notched up further goals on 50 and 87 minutes.

Substitute Bryan Neblett netted Barbados' fifth goal after 75 minutes.

Anguilla, who impressed throughout the tournament with their determination and willingness to compete against their much fancied opponents, gave the Barbadians a minor scare when they pulled a goal back just after half-time.

Girdon Connor stung the Bajans with a well-struck shot from just inside the area which beat the tall Alvin Rouse into the top corner of his goal to make it 3-1.
