Anderson's strike gives Wadadah derby victory
published: Tuesday | September 26, 2006

Western Bureau:

Wadadah won the first Montego Bay derby of the 2006-07 Wray & Nephew National Premier League (NPL) football competition on Sunday night when a classy second-half goal by burly striker Jermaine Anderson gave them a 1-0 win over arch-rivals Seba United at Jarrett Park.

"It was a hard-fought victory because as you saw the Seba team was still coming at us even in the final moments of the game," said Wadadah's coach Anthony 'Follies' Williams. "Because of the format of the competition every single point is important so we are delighted that we got all three."

Wadadah, which started the season with a 3-1 win against Arnett Gardens, but lost 0-1 to Reno in their second game, are now on six points while Seba United, which started with a 2-0 result against Portmore United, but lost their second game 0-1 to Village United, remain on three points.

"We need forwards with killer instinct," said Seba United's coach Geoffrey Maxwell. "We got enough chances to have gotten a few goals this afternoon but the forwards let down the team. We are going to have some problems unless our forwards start converting the chances we are creating."

Fast-paced and exciting

The game, which was fast-paced and exciting, saw Wadadah creating the first scoring opportunity in the eighth minute when Scion Thorpe crossed perfectly to Anderson before the goal, but his looping header cleared the crossbar.

Midway the half, Seba United took charge, peppering the Wadadah defence with all-out attacks. However, except for a cracking free-kick by Iton Scott, which struck the left upright, they were basically kept at bay by a combination of goalkeeper Gavin Barrett and central defender Damion Nelson.

With action swinging from end to end at the start of the second half, Wadadah took the lead in the 50th minute. A swift exchange of passes between skipper Daniel Rickettes and Deshaun Wollery provided Thorpe with a clear opening to cross into the goal area. His cross found the unmarked Anderson, who struck home between the goalkeeper's leg, making the score 1-0.

It was all excitement after Wadadah took the lead as the two teams took turns launching stinging attacks at each other.

In the dying moments Seba United threw everything into attack but the Wadadah defence stood up stoutly, thwarting most of the shots that came their way.
