ELTHAM HIGH powered their way to a 3-0 victory over Camperdown and maintained their lead at the top of Group D in ISSA\Pepsi\JN Manning Cup action at Eltham High school yesterday.
Although the home team was dominant in terms of ball possession and constantly looked a threat to score, it was a string of bizarre goalkeeping errors which saw them snatch all three points. The man between the sticks for Camperdown, Omarro Smith, seemed to have got his hands to a 13th-minute free kick from Eltham captain Tremaine Stewart but, much to the delight of hundreds of Eltham supporters on hand, could not keep the ball out of the back of the net.
After making a sensational full stretch save to deny a Stephen Stewart header flicked on in the 60th minute, Smith would make a serious blunder when he allowed a long-distance shot by substitute Sheron Brown to slip between his legs and roll slowly into the back of the net, putting Eltham two up nine minutes later.
Goalkeeping errors
Camperdown's second string keeper, Nicko Simpson, would complete the comedy of goalkeeping errors in the 89th minute, when he allowed a shot taken by Stewart from just inside his own half to bounce over his head an into the back of the net.
"It was just one of those days. It was a bad day ... three goalkeeping errors led to three goals but every team has one of those," said Camperdown coach Barrington Gaynor who, before yesterday's game, had seen his team rack up a string of impressive results.
Meanwhile, at Tinson Pen, a 59th-minute strike from Kimarlie Brissett carried Nornan Manley to a 1-0 victory over Spanish Town in their Group B top-of-the-table clash. B
