House to debate censure proposal brought against Samuda Tuesday
published: Sunday | October 1, 2006

The censure motion brought against Opposition Member of Parliament for North Central St. Andrew, Karl Samuda, is to be debated, this week Tuesday.

Leader of Government Business, Dr. Peter Phillips, made the disclosure while responding to queries made by Leader of Opposition Business, Derrick Smith and Opposition Member of Parliament for North Central Clarendon, Pearnel Charles, as to why the motion was not debated.

"The Opposition wishes to advise the Government that we are not taking lightly to this resolution on the Order Paper against our colleague and that it should be given an order of priority in this House," said Mr. Charles, "because the Opposition wishes to expose the lie and to bring to the public all the facts surrounding this document."

The Leader of Government Business assured the Opposition that the matter would be dealt with this week.

Government Member, Donald Buchanan, earlier this month brought the censure motion against Mr. Samuda, as he accused him of misleading the House for claiming that a report from Noel Hylton of the Port Authority of Jamaica on the controversial Sandals Whitehouse Hotel project was being hidden by the Government.

Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller denied ever seeing such report and said that it was never submitted to the Cabinet.

Government members had demanded that Mr. Samuda apologised as the statements were erroneous, but Opposition Leader, Bruce Golding, in Mr. Samuda's absence, said there would be no apology.
